Grammy-nominated ensemble Sandbox Percussion brought its boundary-pushing approach to contemporary music and collaboration to the TED stage in 2026, marking the group’s first appearance at the internationally renowned conference.
Known for commissioning, performing, recording, and teaching innovative music for percussion, Sandbox Percussion has become one of the leading voices in contemporary chamber music through close collaborations with living composers and a commitment to expanding the sonic possibilities of percussion performance. Their work frequently incorporates unconventional instrumentation — from crystal glasses and ceramic bowls to found objects and electronics — creating immersive sound worlds that challenge and redefine traditional concert experiences.
The TED appearance marked an exciting new platform for the ensemble, allowing them to share not only their music, but also their ideas surrounding experimentation, collaboration, and the evolving future of contemporary performance. Their presentation highlighted the ensemble’s belief that percussion can function simultaneously as rhythm, texture, melody, theater, and storytelling.
Over the past decade, Sandbox Percussion has appeared at venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series, while touring extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and North America. The ensemble can also be heard on the soundtrack to DreamWorks’ The Wild Robot, where they helped create the film’s distinctive percussion-based sound world.
Sandbox Percussion’s TED debut took place during TED2026: All of Us, a day of programming centered on sound, listening, creativity, and innovation.
