Sandbox Percussion made its NPR Tiny Desk debut with music by Andy Akiho and Viet Cuong, showcasing the ensemble’s inventive sound world.
Sandbox Percussion made its debut on NPR’s iconic Tiny Desk Concert series, joining the internationally recognized platform known for showcasing groundbreaking artists across every musical genre. Filmed in the intimate stripped-down format that has made Tiny Desk a global phenomenon, the performance highlighted the ensemble’s adventurous sound world and longtime collaborations with composers Andy Akiho and Viet Cuong.
The program featured selections from Akiho’s Pulitzer Prize-finalist work Seven Pillars alongside Cuong’s Water, Wine, Brandy, Brine, performed on an inventive collection of instruments including crystal glasses, tuned ceramic bowls, metal pipes, and steelpan. Known for pushing the boundaries of percussion performance through theatrical instrumentation and close creative partnerships with living composers, Sandbox Percussion brought its distinctive collaborative energy to one of today’s most influential music platforms.
